About Reflexology

Although it's origins can be traced back to ancient times, reflexology as we know it in western culture, was developed by an American named Dr. William Fitzgerald about a century ago.

Dr. Fitzgerald found that by applying pressure to one part of the body, he could relieve pain in another part of the body. This led him to believe they were linked by a flow of energy. After much research into the phenomenon, he came to develop a healing system he called "zone therapy".

It was further developed from 1889-1974 by American physiotherapist named Eunice Ingham. The foot was mapped out into areas corresponding to the various glands, organs and systems of the body. The whole body therefore is represented in the feet. The right foot corresponding to the right side of the body, and the left foot to the left side. Any organ can be stimulated by applying pressure to the parts of the foot (reflexes) representing that organ. Since then, reflex points have been located to include the hands and even entire body by such practitioners as Mildred Carter.

You can prove this to your self quite easily by simply rubbing the middle portions on the bottom of your feet the next time your stomach feels sour. The results can be immediate as you will begin to feel trapped gas move due to the stimulation.

Reflexology is a holistic therapy because massaging reflex points is said to relieve stress and tension, promote a sense of well being, improve nerve function and blood supply, increase energy and vitality and encourage the body's self-healing mechanisms.

In a consultation the Reflexologist, he will ask questions about the client's state of health, medical background and current problems. The bare feet will then be examined. Treatment involves moving the thumb and fingers over the foot in small, precise movements. Locating the tender and sensitive areas will suggest imbalances in the corresponding organs. Applying pressure is believed to break up crystal-like deposits, which in turn helps cells to eliminate toxins, unblock nerve impulses, and improve blood supply.

By comparison, the person using the Accu-Flex massager on themselves will already know their medical background and current problems. It will be easy to locate the tender and sensitive areas using the point end of the tool and then use the charts to find out which corresponding organs may have imbalances.

The benefit to doing it yourself is that you can control how hard to press and which areas need the most work.

Conditions that may respond to reflexology: asthma, chronic pain, circulatory disorders, constipation, headaches, high blood pressure, irritable bowel syndrome, migraine, painful periods, recovery from surgery, sinus problems, stress related problems, urinary problems.

Please be advised: The Accu-Flex charts are not meant to be used as a medical diagnostic tool. If you have personal health issues, you should consult a health care professional such as a Medical Doctor, Naturopathic Physician, Chiropractor, Massage Therapist, etc.

Unlike other Reflexology charts which are more mystically based, the Accu-Flex charts are organized by body systems and presented in a simple to read and understand fashion. If you are having problems breathing, simply rub all of the  blue shaded areas on your feet and hands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I use the tool to diagnose illness myself?
A: No, if you suspect that you may have some serious illness, you should always consult with a medical professional.

Q: Is it safe to use or do I have to get a doctors permission before I start using it?
A: It is perfectly safe to just start using the tool as long as after each session you drink some water to help your body flush out any toxins a treatment may release.

Q: Do I need to use a massage oil with this product?
A: That depends on what type of massage you are doing. For a reflexology massage the answer is no because you want the tool to stay on the point of contact. For a regular deep muscle massage any massage oil or lotion will allow the tool to slid smoothly over the skin and will give you a much more pleasant experience.

Q: How hard should I rub a reflex point?
A: If you rub an area and it really hurts then that is your body's way of telling you that you are probably rubbing to too hard, ease off a little and increase pressure a little at a time.
